Our History

    The School of Foreign Languages, Changzhou Institute of Technology (CIT), has a history that dates back to the Department of Language and Literature under Changzhou Institute of Industrial Technology (the predecessor of CIT), which started the enrollment in Japanese and English majors in 1980. By 2000, the Department offered such programs as 1) English, 2) Japanese, 3) Business English, 4) Foreign Trade English, and 5) English and International Trade (Dual Major). 

    In 2000, Changzhou Institute of Technology was formed as an undergraduate college after the merging of the Changzhou Institute of Industrial Technology and Changzhou University for Machinery and Metallurgy Workers, with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In the same year, English Major embarked on the enrollment of the first promotion of undergraduate students. In February 2001, the Department of Foreign Languages was established as a result of the separation between Chinese and Foreign Languages programs. Japanese program, together with Japanese and International Trade (Dual Major), began the enrollment of junior college students. In September 2013, the Department was restructured into the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) as it merged the Foreign Language Department of Changzhou Teachers’ College (in preparation back then). In 2007 and 2013 respectively, SFL began the enrollment of undergraduate students in Japanese, together with Business English. 

Current Situation

    CIT has five teaching divisions, which are Translation Department, Business English Department, Japanese Department, Foreign Expert Office, and College English Teaching Department, offering three undergraduate programs respectively in English, Business English, and Japanese. Among all the programs, the English program is both a specialty program at the college level and a key program for the 12th Five-Year Plan. The English language and literature is a key discipline for the 12th and 13th Five-Year Plans at the college level.  

    The School of Foreign Languages has 84 members including 3 professors (2 part-time master supervisors), 1 senior research fellow, 26 associate professors, and 48 lecturers, with 26 doctors (candidate included) and 53masters (candidate included). Besides, 3 foreign experts were recruited permanently. Currently, there are 1061full-time students, including 274 in the Japanese program, 375 in the English program, and 412 in the Business English program.

    Since the establishment, the School of Foreign Languages sticks to the positioning to reach across the country with the root in Changzhou and the foothold in the Yangtze River Delta and dedicates to fostering foreign language professionals adapted to local services as practical and interdisciplinary talents. Currently, it has trained up thousands of foreign language professionals for foreign trade, foreign affairs, translation, and other fields. Each year, over 98% of graduates landed their first job right after graduation.
